What this is
Balance Notes publishes short articles about the ordinary side of living with diabetes: daily routine, everyday meals, self-care habits, and the small practical structures that make a week easier to run. We are not a clinic. We are not a medical publication. We sit somewhere between a notebook and a small editorial site.
The site began in 2021 as a shared set of notes between a few people navigating diabetes in their own households. It grew slowly. As of 2026, we publish on a roughly weekly cadence and read each piece carefully before it goes live.
How we work
Our editorial approach is quiet:
- Every note is written by someone who lives with diabetes or cares closely for someone who does, and who has actually kept the habit it describes.
- At least one other editor reads each piece before it is published.
- We do not write under personal bylines — the articles represent the editorial team's voice.
- We update older notes when our thinking on something changes, with a short note about what changed.
- We never publish claims that a habit, food, or product can treat, prevent, reverse, or cure diabetes or any other condition. Not softened versions of those claims either. None.
What we don't do
For clarity:
- We are not doctors, endocrinologists, dietitians, podiatrists, nurses, or medical professionals of any kind. Nothing on this site is medical, dietary, or diagnostic advice.
- We do not diagnose conditions, interpret test results, or recommend treatments, medications, dosages, or monitoring routines.
- We do not sell products, supplements, devices, meal plans, or courses.
- We do not run sponsored content or affiliate links inside articles.
- We do not review or endorse diabetes-related products, and we decline all requests to do so.
- We do not currently accept guest posts.
Who reads us
Our readers are mostly adults who live with diabetes themselves, plus a good number of partners, adult children, and friends looking for a calmer way to think about the everyday side of it. Many tell us they forward a note to someone they love. That mix feels about right for what we are trying to do.
How the site is supported
Balance Notes is supported by a small voluntary newsletter and occasional reader donations. We do not run banner advertising. We do not sell email addresses. The site runs on a modest infrastructure and is intended to stay that way.
A note on tone
Writing about diabetes tends toward two extremes — alarm on one side, breathless promises on the other. We try to do neither. The articles here are designed to be useful at the level of an ordinary day: a meal that arrives on time, a two-minute glance at your feet, a kit that's where you left it. If a piece can help with that, we publish it. If it can't — or if it would need a claim to be interesting — we don't.
When to see a professional
General habits are no substitute for qualified care, and with diabetes that matters more than usual. Please contact your doctor or care team promptly about any wound that isn't healing, changes in your feet, vision, or sensation, symptoms of very high or very low blood sugar, or anything that concerns you — and treat severe symptoms as an emergency. Never change or stop a prescribed medication, insulin, monitoring routine, or meal plan based on anything you read here or anywhere else online.
